When it comes to higher education, the thought of studying abroad has its own charm for students. A degree from a UK university not only opens doors to international opportunity but also enriches you. The United Kingdom is a culturally diverse nation, where people from all over the world feel welcomed.

Furthermore, no matter your ethnicity or country of origin, you will find other students who share your background in this country. However, it’s normal to have apprehensions initially for starting an unknown journey. But, you need not worry; by preparing smartly and adequately, you can fulfil your dream of receiving a quality education abroad.

Now, check out 8 essential steps and certain factors to follow:

      #Step 1 –

      Gather complete information

      1. Do you already know someone who has studied in the UK, or lives there? Ask them about the procedures, rules and regulations and enrolment in universities.
      2. Make judicious use of the internet. Look into various websites about abroad education in the UK. Additionally, you must take help of professional overseas education consultants like Edwise. They can help you with career counselling, application process along with test preparations.
      3. Arranging funds for your education is also crucial. So, prepare and plan your budget. You may use the UNAID student calculator, which helps to figure out the total expense for living and studying in abroad.

      #Step 2 –

Prepare your visa and paper work

It’s crucial that you possess all the important documentation and a visa to study in the UK. You may take the help of a counsellor regarding the same.

Additionally, for European nationals, it is beneficial to have a European Health Insurance Card. One will have access to free or less expensive healthcare as in accordance with National Health Service scheme with the card.

      #Step 3 –

      Sort out your communication

You need not worry about your mobile phone as long as it works with GSM technology and supports SIM cards. However, be sure to change your SIM and switch to a UK telecom service provider’s network. Using your local SIM will incur you a lot of international roaming charges.

Few tips to save costs on phone bills while in the UK –

      • For connecting with your family and friends back home, you can choose an inexpensive international telecom network. We recommend Rebtel from our experience, as it costs the least with calls under 1 penny a minute. Additionally, you get the 1st call free.
      • Use Skype alternatively.
      • It’s better to use Pay As You Go plans. It allows you to track your spending. Likewise, monthly contracts can be good and you’ll receive free SMS and calling minutes.

      # Step 4 –

      Arrange for accommodations

Initially, it’ll be convenient for you to reside in university accommodations in your first year. As you become accustomed to life there, you can make new contacts, and move to some other location. Furthermore, in university, you’ll meet people from across the world.

      #Step 5 –

      Set up your bank accounts

It’s advisable that you start a bank account in the UK if you’re going to stay there for more than a month. UK banks can be strict about starting an account, as credit offers are often paired with them. A bank will require you to present the following documents –

      • A passport for your identity proof
      • Address proof – Both your home country and in the UK.

Proof of Income – To open a student account, you need to produce the University confirmation letter. A credit check will also be conducted to ensure you are capable of maintaining the account. We highly advise you to opt for a student account as they come with a lot of benefits.

      #Step 6 –

      Stock on appropriate clothing

The UK experiences a chilly and wet weather. So, pack plenty of warm clothes and waterproof apparels.

      #Step 7 –

Arrange for your hassle free travel

The UK offers multiple facilities for travelling with convenience.

      1. You may buy a yearly pass called UniRider for riding in buses by a company called Stage Coach. This is a cheap and convenient mode of travelling in the cities.
      2. While in London, you can use the tube, the fastest way to go around the city. The Oyster card is what we recommend for this mode of transportation.
      3. Consider trains and coaches for a cheaper alternative to travel. In case of the coach, our best pick is Megabus, which offers fares as low as 1 pound to travel between major cities.

      #Step 8 –

      Know about working rights

You can work while being a student in the UK, and continue the same after obtaining your degree. Refer to the official guides at UK Council International Students Affairs for detailed information on matters regarding work permits.

Finally, work closely with your counsellor to take care of funding and recommendations, so as to ensure your admission.
